Evans Centre Halloween Candy Buy Back 2011 - 4th Annual

Tuesday Nov 1st 2011, between 4:30 - 7:30pm, bring your excess Halloween candy to The Evans Centre for Dental Health & Wellness. All kids will receive a cool L.E.D. ‘FireFly’ Toothbrush. For every pound of candy you bring in, you’ll receive $1 cash and 1 entry into a draw for an ipod nano! The more sweets you bring in, the more cash and entries you’ll receive! Win great door prizes from our health and family focused sponsors. You could win an ipod or a New VitaMix Blender or even a Strider Scoot Bike!

Research has identified many health and dental related problems caused by excessive and prolonged consumption of sugars, colour and high fructose corn syrup. The Candy Buy-Back provides a fun option for avoiding these problems. Have some treats on Halloween night by all means, just don't be the high fructose corn syrup poster child with a sugar feed sack for two and three weeks! Tell your friends and start a healthy tradition this year. Why not give out some invitations along with treats at the door to your trick-or-treaters? Stop by the Evans Centre for a stack of handouts you can use! See you at the Candy Buy-Back, and remember to wear your costumes!

Hey! That's a better idea. Although we will certainly be throwing the collected candy in the garbage again this year (it isn't really food, just read the ingredients ... yikes!), we are going to donate fresh apples to the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank. For every pound of Halloween candy we collect and toss, we'll donate a pound of fresh apples to the Food Bank.

We just harvested these apples in time! It was snowing in Calgary on the morning of Oct. 31st. The Evans family's long time friend Howie Witter was kind enough to deliver these freshly picked apples from his B.C. orchard before the snow and freezing temperatures spoiled them. Thank you very much Howie for picking and delivering these on such short notice!

Wow! What a party. Thanks to you, we were able to remove over 1600lbs of candy from circulation this year! Over 1250lbs arrived on the night of the event (the record individual trick-or-treat bag brought in was 22lbs this year - imagine a youngster eating 22lbs of terrible ingredients!). More contributions came in during the week; for over 1600lbs of candy. Thanks to all our sponsors for their help and for the prizes!

Thanks for helping us take over 1600lbs of high fructose corn syrup, gmo's, transfats, artificial colours and refined sugars off the street; it was a sweet party. We're investigating the possibility of turning all of the candy into Bio-fuel - http://alcoholcanbeagas.com/

We have received many thoughtful suggestions about possible avenues for the mountain of candy we now have. It was collected under the agreement that it would not be consumed by any other person(s) near or far so we can't go back on our word as relatively praiseworthy as some of the candy suggestions are. The possibilty of turning it into fuel-alcohol seems very interesting. It may be wishful thinking but we'll see what we can do. The point is that, in these quantities, it was, is, and will be garbage. Ideal? no, but a conversation worth having none the less we feel. There are supportive, indifferent and disapproving voices regarding the candy but who better than dentists to raise a red flag over excessive sweets? Thanks again.
